I am writing this post after reading some extremely disturbing news. I don’t want to delve into what the news is but rather reflect on something.
The animal world is very simple. Animals eat what they are meant to eat and when they want to. They understand the world in terms of survival and most of the actions they do are a direct result of their desire to survive. When we humans look at the animal world, we sometimes see cruelty of a predator killing a prey and we conclude that “humans are not animals”. What we claim is that humans are civilised bunch and do not operate like animals do.
But is that really so ?
Humans have always had this “higher than thou” attitude where we believe that we are the primary residents of this world and that every other creature is secondary.
But imagine what goes into making humans civilized? Are humans born civilized or are they “domesticated” into being civilised ?
Just think about the thousands of years of efforts that have gone into making the human animal a docile one. While we may not consciously realise but following are a bunch of restrictions placed on humans through the concept of society in order to domesticate humans. Even then it is still difficult to stop humans from behaving like “animals”.
a. Police and judicial structures
b. State and country borders
c. Societal conditioning about moral right and wrong
d. School education
e. Religion
The list goes on and on.
With all these domestication methods being deployed for thousand of years, how come humans still often behave in the most unacceptable ways and end up doing atrocities on each other ?
In fact, I would say that humans are actually the worst kind of animals, and have potential to unleash the worst kind of terror on this planet, and it is evident from watching what is happening all around us.
